Photographs showing the surface of the lava basin at Kilauea, Hawaii
Exhibitor:
Dr. Arthur L. Day
Section:
III. Scientific and Technical Photographs, &c.
Exhibit No.:
334 to 338
Description:
The pictures were made in the summer of 1912 in a period of great eruptive activity, the gas bubbles and splashes reaching 60 feet in diameter. The lake itself was about 600 x 300 feet. The temperature varied from 1050°-1175°C., the greater the amount of gas given off the higher the temperature. On this expedition for the first time Dr. Shepherd and the author collected the volcanic gases before they had come in contact with the air, and proved that the heating of the lava is due to the chemical reactions between the gases, the temperature being highest at the surface and not in the depths as had previously been supposed.
