- Description:
- Empusa fungus, sisease of House Fly is exceedingly common and shows itself in the white patches which appear on the surface of the body of the affected fly.
The spore bearing filaments of the fungus are seen to have penetrated the body of the Insect and projecting through the integuments of its back.
A fly when suffering from this disease speedily loses its vitality and before death is often seen sticking to the surface of a mirror or window and when so placed is frequently surrounded by a white cloud or halo which consists of the microscopic spores which are disseminated from the growing fungus.
In view of the importance of measures to exterminate the House Fly, which is now recognized as a very active carrier of disease, attempts have been recently made, with some success, to artificially cultivate the Empusa and infect flies which in due course distribute the disease to their fellows.
