- Description:
- This plant is chiefly remarkable for its discontinuous distribution. It grows wild in the British Isles only along the west coast of Ireland and is confined elsewhere to the Pyrenees. Several other plants in the west of Ireland have a similar distribution. Although a mountain plant in Spain, in Ireland it will grow nearly to sea-level, and fine clump photographed was on a low sea-cliff. The manner in which these plants have reached Ireland from Spain has given rise to much conjecture. Scarcely less interesting is the climate and other factors which enable such plants to live in the west of Ireland. Many are not mountain plants like London Pride, and yet they flourish amongst other Irish plants which elsewhere are typically Arctic or Alpine in range.
