Description:
(1) x 100. The female insect is in a partially distended condition, and in (2) x 30 fully distended with ova.
The Chigoe - particularly in the West Indies - attacks man usually in the skin beneath the toes. The female, by means of its large lancets, penetrates the skin, buries the anterior part of her body in it, and becomes enormously distended with eggs. This gives rise to severe inflammation. The treatment consists of the removal of the insect without rupture from the wound, care being taken that no eggs or young are left in the vicinity. In the latter case extensive ulceration is set up.
