- These beautiful growths occur as the result of drooping small pieces of solid calcium chloride into a solution of potassium carbonate and potassium silicate. "Osmosis." The vessel containing the growths is 12 inches in height. The first four photographs show successive stages of the same growth, taken at intervals. The central little more than half natural size. The growths are cellular in structure, and whilst growing they exhibit all the phenomena of life
