Exhibition:
1911 Fifty-sixth Annual Exhibition of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain
Exhibit title:
The absorption lines D1 and D2 of sodium in a magnetic field
Exhibitor:
Professor P. Zeeman
Section:
V. Scientific Photography and Processes of Reproduction
Exhibit No.:
687
688
Description:
(687) Figs. 1 to 4 relate to observations at right angles to the lines of force. The upper and lower of the three strips of the figure with polarised light; in the central strip the phenomenon is represented as it is seen in natural light. The vapour density increases from Figs. 1-4. Figs. 5 and 6, observations parallel to the field with different vapour density showing circular polarisation of the components.
(688) Fig. 7, observation at angle of 39° to the field. Fig. 8, copied from drawing adapted from Mitchell. "Transactions International Union for Solar Research," II., 199, 1908. Fig. 9, spot lines obtained in non-uniform laboratory fields. The correspondence between the types 5, 6, and 10 of Fig. 8 in sun and 5, 6, 7, 10, of Fig. 9 in the laboratory is remarkable.
