- (687) Figs. 1 to 4 relate to observations at right angles to the lines of force. The upper and lower of the three strips of the figure with polarised light; in the central strip the phenomenon is represented as it is seen in natural light. The vapour density increases from Figs. 1-4. Figs. 5 and 6, observations parallel to the field with different vapour density showing circular polarisation of the components.

Fig. 9, spot lines obtained in non-uniform laboratory fields. The correspondence between the types 5, 6, and 10 of Fig. 8 in sun and 5, 6, 7, 10, of Fig. 9 in the laboratory is remarkable.
