Description:
The above five studies of the "Whiskered Tern" are from life. This Tern, although an occasional migrant to Great Britain, does not nest with us. The photographs were taken in May, 1910, in Southern Spain, where, on marshes by the Guadalquiver, they nest in large numbers. The nest is larger than that of most Terns, and is built with rushes and other aquatic vegetation on the surface of water, generally where it is from 1 to 2 feet deep. When the female alights on the nest she raises her wings above her back in the manner characteristic of the family. Various phases of wing elevation are shown in the photographs. They also occasionally lift and spread their wings while sitting on the nest, which is shown in No. 316. The male frequently stands on the side of the nest while the female is sitting, No. 315.
