- A model sledge dragged slowly and steadily through dry gravel, on a lake beach made a level track, but as soon as the sledge get down to the damp gravel the material pushed before it adhered under its pressure, forming a mound of compacted gravel, which the sledge over-rode, forming the first ridge. Loose gravel again accumulating in front of the sledge was consolidated by pressure so as to form a second ridge, and so on. Neither initial inequalities, nor rapid bumping are necessary to the formation of sledge-waves.
