- Description:
- Many mangroves possess special respiratory organs (pneumatophores) in connection with their root-system. In this genus the usual root functions are performed by horizontal roots, while respiration, in the water-saturated mud, is only rendered possible by the development of negatively geotropic aerial roots, which rise above the mud. Numbers of these pneumatophores are seen in the photograph. Kilindini, British East Africa (1905).
