Description:
One of the commonest Asiatic forms of mangrove is Rhizophora mucronata, which is frequent along the sea coasts and in the lower parts of river estuaries. In the photograph can be seen the characteristic aerial "flying buttress" roots. Many mangroves are viviparous, the seedlings often attaining a foot or more in length before falling from the tree. Several seedlings (not rooted) are seen in the foreground. Redang Islands, off E. Coast of Malay Peninsula (1988).
