Description:
Pattern A No. 1. This apparatus, which is made of galvanized iron, japanned, consists of two drums, arranged "gasometer" fashion, for the manufacture of acetylene gas from calcium carbide. The inner drum has a large valve at the top, communicating with a perforated metallic receptacle, designed to hold the carbide. The tube and stopcock at the side are arranged for drawing off the gas, about 1lb. of calcium carbide being required for working with this apparatus (Exhibit No. 370) for two hours. To use the generator, the outer cylinder is filled with water up to a mark inside, and the stopcock is then connected with the burner. The carbide holder is removed from the generator, partially filled with carbide, and replaced, the valve being then securely closed. The gas-holder, on being placed in the water-tank, sinks until the water reaches the carbide, when acetylene is at once generated.
